Bible Chapter Summary

Obadiah 1 Summary

Judgment Against Edom

Obadiah receives a vision pronouncing God's judgment upon Edom for its pride and violence against Israel. Despite dwelling securely in the clefts of the rock and considering itself exalted as an eagle, Edom shall be brought low. Edom's confederates betray her, her wise men are destroyed, and her mighty men are dismayed. God condemns Edom especially for standing aloof and rejoicing over Judah's calamity when strangers entered Jerusalem's gates, for Edom neither aided the afflicted nor prevented the escape of survivors. The prophecy concludes with assurance that the day of the Lord approaches: as Edom has done, so shall be done to her, but Mount Zion shall have deliverance, the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions, and Edom shall be utterly consumed.
