What Does “Exile” Mean in the Bible?
In the King James Bible, “Exile” means “living abroad” in modern English. It is an archaic word from the 1611 KJV that has dropped out of everyday use.
What Was Lost
The theological catastrophe. Exile was not just geographical displacement but spiritual death -- the temple destroyed, God's presence departed, covenant apparently broken, identity shattered. The entire prophetic hope of 'return from exile' was not about geography but about God's presence returning to His people.
