Bible Chapter Summary
1 Chronicles 17 Summary
God Promises David an Eternal House
David sits in his house and says to Nathan the prophet that he dwells in a house of cedars while the ark remains under curtains; Nathan initially encourages him to do all that is in his heart, for God is with him. That same night the word of God comes to Nathan forbidding David to build a house for the Lord, for God has never dwelt in a house but moved from tent to tent. The Lord says he took David from the sheepfold to be ruler over Israel, cut off his enemies, and made him a great name; furthermore, the Lord will build David an eternal house. The Lord promises that David's son shall build a house for the Lord, and his throne shall be established forever, and God will be his father and he shall be God's son. David then humbly comes before the Lord in prayer, marveling at God's greatness and blessing toward him and his house.
