Bible Chapter Summary
2 Chronicles 10 Summary
The Kingdom Divides After Rehoboam's Folly
Rehoboam goes to Shechem where Israel has gathered to make him king. Jeroboam, who had fled to Egypt from Solomon, returns and leads Israel to ask Rehoboam to ease the heavy burdens Solomon imposed. Rehoboam consults first the old men, who advise kindness, but then consults young men who advise him to increase the burden, saying he will chastise with scorpions rather than whips. Rehoboam rejects the old counsel and answers roughly with the young men's advice. Israel rebels and returns to their tents, refusing to follow David's house. Rehoboam sends an officer over tribute, but the people stone him to death. Israel's revolt against the house of David splits the kingdom permanently.
