Bible Chapter Summary

2 Kings 19 Summary

God Delivers Jerusalem from Assyria

Hezekiah tears his clothes and goes to the temple to pray. He sends officials to Isaiah the prophet with a plea for intercession. Isaiah assures them the LORD will defeat Sennacherib, saying a rumor will send him back to his own land where he will fall by the sword. When Sennacherib learns of Tirhakah of Ethiopia approaching, he sends threatening letters. Hezekiah spreads the letter before the LORD and prays, appealing to God's unique sovereignty. Isaiah announces deliverance: Jerusalem will be spared for the LORD's sake and David's. That night, the angel of the LORD strikes down 185,000 Assyrians, and Sennacherib departs to Nineveh, where his own sons kill him.
