Bible Chapter Summary
2 Kings 2 Summary
Elijah's Ascension and Elisha's Succession
As the LORD prepares to take Elijah to heaven by a whirlwind, Elisha faithfully follows him through Gilgal, Beth-el, Jericho, and to the Jordan River. Elijah strikes the waters with his mantle and they part, allowing both men to cross on dry ground. Before being taken up in a chariot of fire pulled by horses of fire, Elijah grants Elisha's request for a double portion of his spirit. Elisha witnesses the translation and receives Elijah's fallen mantle, using it to part the waters of Jordan as proof that the LORD's spirit rests upon him. The sons of the prophets recognize his authority.
