Bible Chapter Summary
Acts 22 Summary
Paul Defends Himself Before the Council
Before the hostile council, Paul gives his defense in Hebrew, recounting his Jewish upbringing and training under Gamaliel, his former zealous persecution of believers, and his dramatic conversion on the Damascus road. He describes seeing a great light, hearing Jesus identify himself, and meeting Ananias who instructed him to be baptized. Paul relates his vision in the temple where Jesus commanded him to leave Jerusalem and go to the Gentiles, which provoked the crowd to cry out for his death. The chief captain had him bound with thongs to examine him by scourging, but Paul reveals his Roman citizenship, causing the centurion and captain to fear and release him. The next day the chief captain brings Paul before the chief priests and council to learn the true charges.
