Bible Chapter Summary

Acts 5 Summary

Ananias and Sapphira Struck Dead; Signs and Wonders Continue

Ananias and his wife Sapphira sell a possession and pretend to lay the full price at the apostles' feet while secretly keeping back part of it; Peter discerns their lie to the Holy Ghost, saying they lied not to men but unto God, and Ananias falls down dead upon hearing these words. Three hours later, Sapphira comes in not knowing what has happened, and Peter asks if they sold the land for the stated price; when she confirms the lie, Peter tells her the feet of those who buried her husband are at the door and shall carry her out, and she immediately falls dead at his feet. Great fear comes upon the whole church and all who hear these things, and meanwhile the apostles continue to work many signs and wonders among the people, bringing multitudes of believers—men and women—to the Lord. The sick are brought into the streets on beds and couches so that Peter's shadow might overshadow them, and multitudes come from cities round about bringing the sick and those vexed with unclean spirits, and they are all healed.
