Bible Chapter Summary
Acts 6 Summary
The Seven Deacons Chosen; Stephen Does Great Wonders
When the number of disciples multiplies, the Grecians murmur against the Hebrews because their widows are neglected in the daily ministration, so the twelve apostles ask the disciples to choose seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, to oversee this business while the apostles give themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word. The disciples choose Stephen (a man full of faith and the Holy Ghost), Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch, and the apostles lay their hands on them after prayer. The word of God increases greatly, and the number of disciples multiplies in Jerusalem; a great company of priests become obedient to the faith. Stephen, full of faith and power, does great wonders and miracles among the people, but certain men from the synagogue of the Libertines dispute with him and are unable to resist the wisdom and spirit by which he speaks. They suborn men to accuse him of speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God, and when he is brought before the council, they set up false witnesses who claim he speaks against the holy place and the law.
