Amos 5 Summary

Lament and Call to Repentance

Amos takes up a lamentation over Israel: the virgin of Israel has fallen and shall no more rise, forsaken upon her land with none to raise her up. The cities that went out by a thousand will leave only an hundred; those going forth by a hundred will leave only ten. The LORD calls Israel to seek him and live, but warns them not to seek Beth-el, Gilgal, or Beer-sheba, for these places shall be judged. Instead, Israel must seek the LORD and hate the evil and love the good, establishing judgment in the gate, that he may be gracious to the remnant of Joseph. The day of the LORD will be darkness, not light. Though Israel offers burnt offerings and meat offerings, the LORD will not accept them, and he abhors their feast days and solemn assemblies. The LORD demands judgment to run down as waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.
