Bible Chapter Summary
Deuteronomy 7 Summary
Separation, Election, and Covenant Blessings
Moses commands Israel to utterly destroy the seven Canaanite nations upon entering the land, making no covenants or intermarriages with them, and demolishing their altars and idols, lest Israel be led into idolatry. He grounds this command in Israel's identity as a holy, chosen people—not because of their numerical greatness, but solely because of the LORD's love and His sworn oath to the patriarchs. Moses then declares that faithful obedience to the LORD's statutes will result in abundant covenant blessings: fruitfulness, health, and military victory over their enemies. He closes by urging Israel not to fear the Canaanite nations, pointing to the mighty acts God performed in Egypt as assurance that God will likewise drive out the nations gradually before them, and warns strictly against coveting or retaining any of the idolatrous objects of the defeated peoples.
