Bible Chapter Summary

Deuteronomy 8 Summary

Remember God, Beware Prosperity's Pride

Moses commands Israel to observe all of God's commandments so that they may live, multiply, and possess the promised land. He calls them to remember the forty years of wilderness wandering, during which God humbled and tested them — allowing hunger, then feeding them with manna, preserving their clothing and feet — to teach them that life depends on every word from God's mouth, and that God disciplines them as a father disciplines a son. Moses vividly describes the richness of Canaan, a well-watered land abundant with grain, fruit, and mineral wealth, and urges Israel to bless God upon enjoying its plenty. He then solemnly warns them that in their future prosperity they must not become proud and forget God, attributing their wealth to their own power; forgetting God and following other gods will bring destruction as certain as that which fell on the nations before them.
