Bible Chapter Summary
Exodus 18 Summary
Jethro's Visit and Delegation of Judgment
Jethro, the priest of Midian and Moses' father-in-law, travels to the Israelite camp at the mount of God, bringing with him Moses' wife Zipporah and their two sons, Gershom and Eliezer. Moses greets Jethro warmly, recounts all that the LORD had done for Israel in delivering them from Egypt, and Jethro rejoices and offers burnt offerings and sacrifices before God, joined by Aaron and all the elders of Israel. The following day, Jethro observes Moses alone judging the people from morning until evening and warns him that this arrangement will exhaust both him and the people, counseling him instead to appoint God-fearing, trustworthy men as rulers over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens to handle smaller disputes while Moses addresses only the most difficult cases. Moses heeds Jethro's advice, selects and installs these leaders accordingly, after which Jethro departs and returns to his own land.
