Bible Chapter Summary
Exodus 2 Summary
Birth and Early Life of Moses
A Levite woman conceives and bears a son, hiding him for three months before placing him in a papyrus ark among the reeds of the Nile; Pharaoh's daughter discovers the infant, has compassion on him, and unknowingly hires his own mother to nurse him, later adopting him and naming him Moses. When Moses is grown, he witnesses an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, kills the Egyptian, and hides the body in the sand, but when the act becomes known, he flees from Pharaoh to the land of Midian. There Moses defends the seven daughters of the priest Reuel from hostile shepherds, is welcomed into Reuel's household, marries his daughter Zipporah, and fathers a son named Gershom. The chapter closes with the death of the Egyptian king, the intensifying groaning of the enslaved Israelites, and God hearing their cry and remembering His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
