Bible Chapter Summary
Exodus 34 Summary
Covenant Renewed and Moses' Shining Face
God commands Moses to hew two new stone tablets and ascend Mount Sinai alone, where the LORD descends in a cloud and proclaims His name, declaring Himself merciful, gracious, longsuffering, and just. Moses worships and intercedes for Israel, and God renews the covenant, promising to do marvels and drive out the Canaanite nations while enjoining Israel to destroy pagan altars, avoid intermarriage with the inhabitants, and observe the appointed feasts, sabbaths, firstfruits offerings, and the Ten Commandments. Moses remains on the mount forty days and forty nights without food or water, and the LORD instructs him to write these words as the terms of the renewed covenant. When Moses descends with the two tablets, his face radiates light from having spoken with God, frightening the Israelites, so he veils his face when addressing the people but removes the veil whenever he enters God's presence.
