Bible Chapter Summary

Genesis 13 Summary

Abram and Lot Separate in Canaan

Returning from Egypt, the wealthy Abram journeys back to Bethel, where he had previously built an altar, and again calls on the name of the LORD. Because both Abram and Lot possess such great flocks, herds, and tents, the land cannot sustain them together, and strife breaks out between their herdmen. Abram graciously offers Lot the first choice of land, and Lot selects the well-watered plain of Jordan, pitching his tent toward the wicked city of Sodom, while Abram remains in Canaan. After the separation, the LORD reaffirms His covenant with Abram, promising him and his descendants all the land in every direction, and a seed as innumerable as the dust; Abram then settles at the plain of Mamre in Hebron and builds an altar to the LORD.
