Genesis 14 Summary

Abram Rescues Lot and Meets Melchizedek

Four eastern kings led by Chedorlaomer of Elam defeat a coalition of five Canaanite kings in the vale of Siddim, plundering Sodom and Gomorrah and taking Abram's nephew Lot captive along with his goods. Upon hearing the news, Abram mobilizes 318 trained servants, pursues the victorious kings northward to Dan and beyond, defeats them by night, and recovers Lot, the captives, and all the spoil. On his return, Melchizedek king of Salem — described as priest of the most high God — brings out bread and wine, blesses Abram, and receives from him a tithe of all the recovered goods. Abram then refuses any personal reward from the king of Sodom, vowing to the LORD that he will not take so much as a thread or sandal strap lest the king claim credit for Abram's wealth, though he exempts fair portions for his Amorite allies Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre.
