Bible Chapter Summary
Genesis 5 Summary
Generations from Adam to Noah
Genesis 5 presents the genealogical record from Adam to Noah, tracing ten generations with the age of each patriarch at the birth of his named son, his remaining years, and his total lifespan. Each entry follows a formulaic pattern noting that the patriarch "begat sons and daughters" and then died, underscoring human mortality despite the extraordinary lifespans recorded. A notable exception is Enoch, who "walked with God" and "was not; for God took him," never receiving the customary death notice. The chapter closes with Lamech naming his son Noah and expressing hope that Noah will bring comfort from the curse upon the ground, after which Noah's three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—are briefly introduced.
