Bible Chapter Summary

Isaiah 44 Summary

Idols Powerless, God Sovereign

God calls Jacob and Israel, formed from the womb, to hear Him and not fear. He promises to pour water upon the thirsty and floods upon the dry ground, pouring His spirit upon their seed and blessing upon their offspring. God declares He is the first and last, beside whom there is no God, and mocks those who make graven images for their weakness and futility. The chapter details the foolishness of idol-makers who carve wood, take part to make fire, warm themselves with embers, and then make the rest into a god to worship. God contrasts this with His eternal nature and promises to raise up Cyrus as His shepherd to accomplish His pleasure and rebuild Jerusalem and the temple.
