Bible Chapter Summary

Jeremiah 29 Summary

Letter to the Captives in Babylon

Jeremiah sends a letter to the captives in Babylon through envoys to Zedekiah, instructing them to build houses, plant gardens, take wives, and multiply, seeking the peace of Babylon and praying for it, as their peace depends on the city's peace. He warns them against false prophets and diviners in their midst who claim Babylon's rule will quickly end. Jeremiah promises that after seventy years God will visit them and return them to Jerusalem, and reveals God's thoughts toward them are peace, not evil, to give them an expected end. He commands them to seek God with their whole heart and promises they will find Him. The letter also pronounces judgment on those who remained in Jerusalem, threatening them with sword, famine, and pestilence like bad figs, and identifies false prophets Ahab and Zedekiah who will be roasted in fire by Nebuchadrezzar.
