Jeremiah 28 Summary

Hananiah's False Prophecy and Jeremiah's Rebuke

Hananiah the prophet of Gibeon publicly declares in the temple that God has broken the yoke of the king of Babylon and promises the vessels of the temple and the captives will return within two years. Jeremiah initially affirms the desire for this outcome but then warns Hananiah that the prophets of old prophesied of war, evil, and pestilence, and that a prophet claiming peace is only proven true if his words come to pass. Hananiah tears the yoke from Jeremiah's neck and breaks it, prophesying God will break Babylon's yoke from all nations in two years. But the LORD reveals to Jeremiah that Hananiah has spoken falsely and broken wooden yokes, so God will make yokes of iron, and Hananiah will die that year for teaching rebellion against the LORD. Hananiah dies in the seventh month.
