Bible Chapter Summary
John 16 Summary
The Comforter and Abiding Peace
Jesus forewarns that the world will put the disciples out of synagogues and kill them, thinking they do God service, all because they know neither the Father nor Him. He tells them these things so they may remember His warnings when trials come. Because He goes to the Father, sorrow fills their hearts, yet He declares it expedient that He depart, for otherwise the Comforter—the Spirit of truth—cannot come. This Spirit will reprove the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment; will guide the disciples into all truth; and will glorify Christ by showing them things to come. Though they shall weep while the world rejoices, their sorrow shall be turned to joy, like a woman whose anguish turns to joy at bearing a child. In His name they shall ask and receive, that their joy may be full, and in Him they shall have peace in the midst of worldly tribulation.
