Bible Chapter Summary
John 19 Summary
Crucifixion and Burial
Pilate scourges Jesus and the soldiers plait a crown of thorns and clothe Him in a purple robe, mocking Him as King of the Jews. When Pilate presents Him saying "Behold the man," the chief priests demand crucifixion, claiming He made Himself Son of God. Though Pilate seeks to release Him, the Jews threaten that if he does so he is not Caesar's friend, forcing Pilate to deliver Jesus to be crucified. Jesus bears His cross to Golgotha, where He is crucified with two others on either side, with the title "Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews" written above Him in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. Soldiers divide His garments by lot, and Mary, the mother of Jesus, stands by the cross with His beloved disciple, to whom Jesus commits her care. Knowing all things are accomplished, Jesus says "I thirst," receives vinegar, and declares "It is finished," then bows His head and yields up His spirit. Because it is the preparation day, the Jews ask Pilate that their legs be broken and bodies taken away, but finding Jesus already dead, the soldiers pierce His side. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus take His body and lay it in a new sepulchre in a garden near the place of crucifixion.

John 19:5
“Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!”
John 19:11
“Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.”
John 19:28-30
“After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
John 19:38-42
“And after this Joseph of Arimathæa, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.”
