Bible Chapter Summary
Joshua 1 Summary
God Commissions Joshua to Lead Israel
Following the death of Moses, the LORD speaks directly to Joshua son of Nun, commissioning him to lead the Israelites across the Jordan River into the land promised to their fathers. God defines the boundaries of the land, guarantees that no enemy will overpower Joshua, and repeatedly commands him to be strong and courageous, charging him to meditate on and obey the book of the law continually. Joshua then instructs the people's officers to prepare provisions for the crossing within three days, and specifically reminds the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh of their obligation to cross over armed to aid their brethren before returning to their already-allotted territory east of the Jordan. The eastern tribes respond with full submission to Joshua's authority, pledging obedience as they had given to Moses and declaring that any who rebel against Joshua's command shall be put to death.
