Bible Chapter Summary
Joshua 11 Summary
Northern Coalition Defeated, Land Conquered
Jabin king of Hazor assembles a vast northern coalition of kings and peoples, gathering at the waters of Merom with horses and chariots in great multitude to fight against Israel. The LORD assures Joshua not to fear, promising to deliver them all slain the next day and commanding that their horses be hamstrung and their chariots burned. Joshua launches a sudden attack, routing the coalition, then turns back to capture and burn Hazor—formerly the head of all those kingdoms—while taking all the other northern cities and destroying their inhabitants as Moses had commanded. The chapter closes by noting that the Anakim were cut off from the hill country, that only the Gibeonites had made peace with Israel, and that Joshua ultimately took the whole land and distributed it by tribal inheritance, so that the land rested from war.
