Bible Chapter Summary
Joshua 10 Summary
Southern Campaign and the Long Day
Alarmed by Gibeon's peace treaty with Israel, Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem rallies four other Amorite kings — of Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon — to besiege Gibeon, which appeals to Joshua for rescue. The LORD assures Joshua of victory, and Israel marches through the night from Gilgal, routing the coalition at Gibeon; the LORD adds to the slaughter by casting great hailstones upon the fleeing enemy, and miraculously causes the sun and moon to stand still for about a full day so Israel can complete the battle. The five kings, discovered hiding in a cave at Makkedah, are brought out, publicly humiliated, executed, and sealed in that same cave. Joshua then leads a swift southern campaign, systematically destroying Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, and Debir, with the LORD delivering each city, before returning to the camp at Gilgal.
