Bible Chapter Summary
Joshua 9 Summary
Gibeonites Deceive Israel into a Covenant
When the Canaanite kings unite to oppose Israel, the inhabitants of Gibeon take a different course, disguising themselves as weary travelers from a distant land by donning worn clothing and carrying stale provisions. They approach Joshua at Gilgal and persuade him and the princes of Israel to make a peace covenant with them, citing the fame of the LORD's deeds in Egypt and against the Amorite kings; critically, the Israelites sample their provisions but do not seek counsel from the LORD. Three days later Israel discovers that the Gibeonites are actually nearby neighbors, but the sworn oath prevents the congregation from harming them, despite public murmuring. Joshua confronts the Gibeonites, pronounces a curse upon them for their deception, and assigns them permanently to be hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD.
