Matthew 19 Summary

Divorce and the Rich Young Man

Jesus departs Galilee and comes into the coasts of Judaea, where great multitudes follow and he heals them. The Pharisees tempt him by asking if it is lawful to put away a wife for every cause; Jesus answers that God made them male and female, and what God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. He explains that except for fornication, whoever puts away his wife and marries another commits adultery. Later, a young man asks what good thing he must do to have eternal life; Jesus tells him to keep the commandments and, if he will be perfect, to sell what he has, give to the poor, and follow him. The young man departs sorrowful, for he has great possessions.
