Nehemiah 9 Summary

Confession and Covenant Prayer

The people assemble in sackcloth and fasting on the 24th day of the month. Israelites separate from strangers, confess their sins and their fathers' iniquities, and spend a quarter of the day reading the law and a quarter confessing. The Levites lead a lengthy prayer recounting God's covenant with Abraham, the exodus, wilderness provision, and the people's repeated rebellion and God's merciful restoration. The people acknowledge God's justice in their current captivity.
