Bible Chapter Summary
Ruth 1 Summary
Naomi and Ruth return to Bethlehem
During the time of the judges, a famine drives Elimelech with his wife Naomi and two sons Mahlon and Chilion from Bethlehem to Moab. His sons marry Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth. After Elimelech and both sons die, Naomi hears the Lord has blessed her people with bread and decides to return. Orpah returns to her people, but Ruth pledges herself to Naomi with devoted words: "Whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God." The two arrive in Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest.
