Bible Chapter Summary
1 Timothy 3 Summary
Qualifications for Bishops and Deacons
Paul states that whoever desires the office of bishop seeks a good work and lists specific qualifications: he must be blameless, husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, hospitable, apt to teach, not given to wine or greed, patient, and not quarrelsome or covetous. A bishop must rule his own house well and not be a novice lest pride cause him to fall. Deacons must likewise be grave, faithful, and hold the mystery of faith in a pure conscience. Paul writes these things so Timothy knows how to conduct himself in the church of God, the pillar and ground of truth.
