Bible Chapter Summary
Esther 8 Summary
The Jews' Decree of Deliverance
The king gives Haman's house to Esther the queen, and Mordecai comes before the king, having been revealed by Esther. The king removes the signet ring from Haman and gives it to Mordecai, and Esther sets him over Haman's house. Esther again beseeches the king to reverse the letters devised by Haman to destroy the Jews in all the king's provinces. The king gives Esther and Mordecai authority to write a decree in the king's name and seal it with the king's ring, which no man may reverse. In the third month, on the twenty-third day, the king's scribes write according to Mordecai's commandment to the Jews and all the lieutenants, deputies, and rulers from India to Ethiopia. The new decree grants the Jews in every city the right to gather themselves together and stand for their lives, to destroy all the power of people and provinces that would assault them, and to take the spoil for a prey. Letters are sent by mounted riders in haste. Mordecai goes forth from the king in royal apparel of blue and white with a great golden crown, and the city of Shushan rejoices and is glad. The Jews have light, gladness, joy, and honor in every province, and many people of the land become Jews for fear of them.
