Jeremiah 26 Summary

Jeremiah's Temple Sermon and Threat to His Life

Jeremiah is commanded to stand in the temple court and speak all God's words to the cities of Judah coming to worship, warning that if they do not turn from evil, the temple will become like Shiloh and the city a curse to all nations. When Jeremiah finishes speaking, priests and prophets seize him demanding his death. The princes of Judah come and hear the accusation. Some elders cite the precedent of Micah the Morasthite, whom King Hezekiah did not kill despite similar prophecy, and argue that putting a true prophet to death would bring evil upon their souls. Another elder recalls Urijah the prophet, whom King Jehoiakim hunted down and killed in Egypt, but God spares Jeremiah through the protection of Ahikam son of Shaphan.
