John 8 Summary

The Woman Taken in Adultery and Declarations of Divine Identity

The scribes and Pharisees bring a woman caught in adultery to Jesus, testing him by asking whether she should be stoned according to the law. Jesus writes on the ground and tells them that he without sin should cast the first stone, and all depart, leaving only the woman. Jesus tells her he does not condemn her but commands her to sin no more. He then declares himself the light of the world and teaches extensively about his identity, origin, and judgment, asserting that before Abraham was, he exists as 'I am.'
