Judges 6 Summary

The Call of Gideon

Israel's sin brings seven years of Midianite oppression that strips the land bare, and when they cry out the LORD sends a prophet of rebuke. The angel of the LORD appears to Gideon as he threshes wheat in hiding, calling him a mighty man of valour to save Israel; Gideon offers a sacrifice consumed by fire and builds an altar called Jehovah-shalom. Obeying God, he tears down his father's altar of Baal by night and is renamed Jerubbaal. Clothed with the Spirit, he musters an army and twice tests God with a fleece to confirm his calling.
