Bible Chapter Summary

Luke 9 Summary

Apostles sent out and the Transfiguration

Jesus gives the twelve apostles power and authority over all devils and diseases, and sends them to preach the kingdom and heal the sick with no provisions, instructing them to stay where received and shake off dust from rejected cities. Herod the tetrarch hears of Jesus's deeds and desires to see him, perplexed whether he is John risen, Elijah, or an old prophet. When the apostles return and report what they have done, Jesus takes them to a desert place and feeds five thousand with five loaves and two fishes. Jesus asks who the people say he is, then who his disciples believe him to be; Peter declares him the Christ of God. Jesus predicts his suffering, rejection, death, and resurrection, and teaches that whoever loses his life for Jesus's sake will save it. About eight days later, Jesus is transfigured on a mountain before Peter, John, and James, appearing with Moses and Elijah and hearing the Father's voice. Descending, Jesus heals a demon-possessed boy and rebukes his disciples' unbelief. He teaches about losing one's life and receiving the kingdom of God, and instructs them not to forbid one casting out devils in his name.
