Psalm 109 Summary

Prayer Against Persecutors and Pleas for Vindication

The psalmist calls upon God not to hold His peace as the wicked and deceitful speak lies and hatred against him without cause, rewarding him evil for good. He prays that a wicked man be set over his adversary and Satan stand at his right hand, that his judgment be condemnation and his prayer become sin, his days be few, and his office go to another. Yet the psalmist shifts to describe his own poor and wounded condition—weak through fasting, become a reproach—and pleads for God's help and salvation, trusting that God will vindicate him while his adversaries are clothed with shame.
